Project Charter
Vision Statement
Literacy is fundamental, not only for personal and social development, but also for the ability to function effectively in society. Bookbot's vision is that every child should have the opportunity to develop reading, writing, and communication skills that support a happy and successful life.
Mission Statement
The TTS project provides a Flutter text-to-speech plugin that helps Bookbot applications generate clear, responsive speech from phoneme-level inputs. It supports reading practice, pronunciation feedback, and lip-sync experiences by combining custom ONNX Runtime speech models with practical Flutter APIs.
Community Impact Statement
Bookbot is founded on building a community of learners. Members of the Bookbot community include software developers, educators, students, writers, editors, linguists, accessibility advocates, and more. This project supports that community by making speech synthesis infrastructure easier to integrate into literacy tools for children across languages and platforms.
Project Scope
This repository focuses on:
- Flutter-facing APIs for text-to-speech requests, IPA mapping, and viseme timing.
- Native Android and iOS implementations for ONNX Runtime inference and audio playback.
- Documentation and examples that help application teams integrate and verify speech synthesis behavior.
This repository does not own the wider Bookbot reading curriculum, production content pipeline, or external model training infrastructure.
Licensing Strategy
The project is open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Contributions are accepted under the same license unless explicitly agreed otherwise.
